One Story, Many Lessons: Why I Adapted The Ugly Duckling for Different Grade Levels

Every teacher knows that The Ugly Duckling is much more than a tale about a duckling and a swan. It is a story about difference, rejection, and belonging, themes that resonate with children at every age. But how students experience and understand these themes changes as they grow.

Why adapt the same story?

  • In K–1, children need a shorter version, simple vocabulary, and guiding questions that help them retell the story step by step.
  • In Grades 2–3, students are ready for more detail. They can recognize sequencing, follow character actions, and describe feelings.
  • In Grades 4–5, readers can dig deeper into theme, inference, and personal reflection.

One story, but three very different learning journeys.

How I linked text and tasks

For each level, I started with an adapted version of the story.

  • The text was rewritten with the right length and vocabulary for the age group.
  • Questions and tasks are based on that version, but designed so they still make sense if students already know another retelling.
  • Teacher Answer Keys include both version-specific responses and general acceptable answers, so discussion remains flexible.

Why a bundle works best

With all three levels together in one bundle, teachers can:

  • differentiate more easily in mixed-level classrooms,
  • provide continuity across grades,
  • and use ready-made versions that “grow with students.”

Each resource comes with:

  • Color & B/W worksheets
  • Answer Key with suggested responses
  • A differentiated Maze Page for early finishers (three levels of difficulty)

A broader lesson for students

The Ugly Duckling is a story that stays with us, in childhood and beyond. My goal in adapting it was not only to check comprehension, but also to give teachers a tool to start conversations about feelings, acceptance, and finding your place in the world.
